"Beyond The Newsroom" is part of API West, a full week of programming that includes "New Revenue Models That Work!" "Maximizing Sales Force Effectiveness," "The Next Generation of Media Managers" and "8 Steps to Profitable New Products." Join us in California Sept. 13-17! Learn to pinpoint the opportunities, navigate the pitfalls, and hear from pioneering journalists who have launched successful initiatives to expand their abilities to provide top-notch news and information. Newsrooms may be shrinking, but creative leadership and the smart use of technology can ensure a vibrant future for news organizations. HIGHLIGHTS Neighborhood News Partnerships – Bob Payne has led the networked journalism initiative at The Seattle Times (seattletimes.com), partner ing with some of the leading local news sites to provide readers with the most comprehensive and up-to-date news. He will share his insights into using high-quality, citizen-generated content to extend your reach and relevance and expand your presence in the community. From Editor to Content Broker – Ken Doctor offers unique insights into the business side of digital news and advises editors to obtain the highest quality content at the lowest price. In this age of exploding content creation (“every conceivable kind of company is starting to produce it,” Doctor says), the best editors will use this new marketplace in order to offer their audiences depth, breadth and timeliness in whatever topics interest them. Can You Really Automate Hyperlocal News? – Greg Retsinas shares his experience of using various vendors whose algorithms allow them to aggregate hyperlocal content. Can news organizations benefit from these “content farms”? Find out how a mix of personal involvement and customized tools can be integrated with ongoing newsroom coverage to offer real engagement for local audiences. Leading the Virtual Newsroom –API’s Mary Glick leads participants in a discussion of the challenges of and opportunities in the “link economy.” What are the best strategies for outsourcing integral newsroom functions like copy editing and reporting? How are editors managing relationships and workflow? How can editors ensure that outside content adheres to accepted standards for quality, fairness and transparency? The Power and Perils of Collaboration – Brant Houston’s long career in watchdog journalism has prepared him to play a pivotal role in designing the new news ecosystem, but he recognizes that the skills of investigative reporting may not be those required to negotiate successful relationships among competitors. What talents are required to work effectively in a collaborative environment? How do you get people to overcome suspicion and defensiveness to work together? What are the ground rules for successful collaboration? Working with Nonprofit Watchdogs – Since founding the Watchdog Institute in late 2009, Lorie Hearn has charted a new course for newspaper/non-profit collaboration. Learn how working together with investigative non-profits can benefit traditional newspapers. Who should attend: Newsroom leaders in print and digital who are charged with maintaining editorial quality and growing audience in the wake of newsroom cutbacks. What Alumni of Our Reston Program Say “I got more out of this than I expected to – that’s rare in my experience and professional training.” “Informative and inspiring – great mix of attendees really made for excellent conversations.” “Loved it. Can’t wait to get back to our newsroom and try some of these ideas.” Pay full price for one tuition and get 20% off subsequent tuitions of equal or lesser value.
